Medical & Surgical Consultations

Our vets can offer expert advice on all aspects of feline medicine, therapeutics and care. Whether a recently diagnosed, or a chronic problem our vets are happy to discuss any feline health concerns or treatment options with you. Most medical conditions are diagnosed using a combination of a physical examination, the collection of a patient history, and diagnostics such as imaging, blood or urine tests. We are able to offer the majority of these services on site. We have the facilities for all types of small animal soft tissue surgery including desexing, and orthopaedic surgery, so are able to perform surgery here within the clinic should it be required.

Health Checks

We can carry out health checks on new kittens, adult cats or older feline friends. Depending on their age and physical status this may include a full physical examination, blood pressure checks, blood and urine tests and dental checks.

Regular health checks are recommended to stay on top of your cat’s wellbeing– they are very good at masking problems and sometimes these are not picked up until taken to a vet for examination.

Vaccination

Vaccinations

A full course of vaccinations are required for kittens (a series of 3 in total), followed by yearly boosters as adults to ensure immunity to a variety of potentially deadly diseases. The typical vaccine given is the F3 which covers Feline Herpesvirus, Calicivirus and Panleukopaenia. Other vaccinations available include FIV, Feline Leukaemia virus as well as Feline Chlamydia – chat with one of our vets to assess your cats individual needs.

Microchipping

Microchipping is now a legal requirement for cats in NSW. They need to be microchipped before the age of 12 weeks of age, or before being sold or rehomed. A microchip is implanted under the skin and is about the size of a grain of rice.

Skin Checks

Itchy skin? Flaky skin? Sore? Wounds? These can be caused by many and varied conditions and sometimes take time to get under control. Our vets will work with you and your cat to find the best course of action to diagnose and treat these conditions.

Behaviour consults

Some behaviours we see in cats are “normal”, but are still undesirable in the household setting. Some can be a sign of a serious underlying medical condition, others may be just because you moved your cats favourite pot plant. Once any medical conditions are ruled out, one of our vets or nurses will be happy to talk through any behavior issues you may be having with your cat. Sometimes a referral to a behavior specialist may be needed and we are happy to organise that for you too if required.

Nurse consults

Our nurses come with many years of experience and an array of skills and are happy to see you at any time for weight, dental and blood pressure checks, or to discuss diet and behaviour issues, or any number of other concerns you may be having with your feline family members.

Desexing

Cats are ideally desexed between 4-6 months of age. From July 2020, the NSW government introduced an $80 annual fee in additional to lifetime registration for any cats not desexed by the time they are 4 months of age.
Modern techniques ensure that incisions are tiny, the procedure is minimally invasive, recovery is speedy, and is usually a day procedure only for both males and females. Feel free to chat to one of our staff about the procedures involved.

General Surgery

The Inner West Cat Hospital is equipped with a full surgical suite enabling our vets to perform routine desexing, general soft tissue surgery and orthopaedic surgeries, with patients placed under general anaesthesia or sedation. We are also fortunate to have surgical specialists who will visit our clinic to perform the more complicated surgeries should it be required. All of our surgical patients are closely monitored before, during and after their surgery by one of our experienced nurses and using state of the art monitoring equipment and are supported with top quality analgesics and intravenous fluid therapy. We follow gold standard protocols for anaesthesia, analgesia and fluid therapy and all staff have additional certification and training in either small animal emergency and critical care, surgery or anaesthesia.

Euthanasia

Knowing when to say goodbye will be one of the hardest decisions you will ever need to make. We are here to help you say goodbye at the right time, and make the process as stress free for both you and your pet as possible. At home euthanasia can be organized to make the process as peaceful and stress-free as possible, and in a place where your cat feels most comfortable.

Dental care

It is thought that 85% of cats over the age of 3 years have some sort of dental disease, although it can affect cats of any age.
Dental checks should be performed at least once every 12 months, or every 3-6 months in cats with pre-existing dental issues.
Dental disease such as plaque, tartar, gingivitis, periodontitis, tooth resorption, tooth fractures and other conditions can be very painful and uncomfortable for your cat and can also exacerbate other underlying health conditions such as heart and kidney disease.

Diagnostics

We would love it if cats could tell us what is wrong with them! Unfortunately, this is not the case, so we often need to do blood and urine tests, x rays and ultrasounds to find out what is making them sick – all are services we can offer on site at The Inner West Cat Hospital.

Grooming under sedation

Some cats aren’t very good at grooming themselves, or just like being short haired in the summer. For these cats we offer a grooming service under sedation. The patient is given a sedation for their comfort (so they don’t get stressed) and are monitored during their time of sedation. A full cat clip or lion clip is usually performed. This will leave the cat with a fluffy head, booties and tail (or pom pom tail) and short body all over. For any older cats (over 7yrs of age) a blood test may be required and a full physical exam is given prior to all cats before sedation to ensure it is safe for them and their individual requirements.

Insurance

The Inner West Cat Hospital recommends pet insurance for all kittens and cats. This is literally a lifesaver for many cats in times of severe illness or injury. For those patients with pet insurance, we are happy to put through your claims online for you to fast track your reimbursement. We are also partnered with “Gap Only”, a service which gives you the option of paying for the gap only at time of discharge (much like we do at the doctor) instead of the whole amount at the time of discharge, which would then need to be claimed back from your insurer. The Gap Only service is available to the customers of a number of insurance companies, a full list can be found here GapOnly | GapOnly™
